Ignition detection is one of the most fundamental features of a hardwired GPS tracker. Properly configured ignition settings ensure accurate trip recording, run-hour logging, and power management.
Why Configure Ignition?
Datalink hardwired GPS devices include a dedicated ignition input wire (typically white) that connects to your vehicle’s ignition circuit. This wire can be configured to detect the ignition state and trigger specific device behaviours such as increased tracking frequency, trip start/stop events, and run-hour logging.
How Ignition Detection Works
When the ignition wire senses a high voltage (indicating the ignition is on), the device:
- Begins recording a new trip
- Increases its GPS fix and upload rate
- Logs an ‘ignition on’ event to the platform
When ignition is turned off, the device:
- Ends and uploads the current trip
- Reduces its logging rate to conserve power
- Logs an ‘ignition off’ event
Configuring the Ignition Input
The ignition wire can also be reprogrammed to behave as a standard digital input if required for your application. This is configured via the Device Manager portal under the Ignition tab. Key parameters include:
- Function: Select ‘Digital Input’ for standard ignition detection, or ‘Pulse Counter’ to count electrical pulses through the wire.
- Active Level: Set to ‘High’ if the wire goes high when ignition is on (default), or ‘Low’ if the polarity is reversed.
- Log On Active / Log On Inactive: Configure whether the device logs an event record when the ignition state changes.
Troubleshooting Ignition Detection
If your device is not correctly detecting ignition events, check the following:
- Confirm the ignition wire is connected to a switched 12V/24V source (not a constant live).
- Verify the Active Level setting matches your vehicle’s wiring polarity.
- Test with a multimeter that the wire sees 12V+ when the ignition is on and 0V when off.
