A panic or duress button gives your drivers a discreet way to signal that they are in danger or need immediate assistance. Datalink GPS tracking devices support the connection of external panic buttons to trigger urgent alerts.

What is a Panic Button?

A panic button is a physical button installed within the driver’s reach inside the vehicle. When pressed, it immediately sends a high-priority alert to the tracking platform, notifying your operations team or security personnel that the driver may be in distress.

How It Works with Datalink GPS Devices

The panic button connects to one of the digital input channels on a Datalink hardwired GPS device. When the button is pressed:

1. The device logs a ‘panic’ or ‘input activated’ event.
2. The event is transmitted immediately to the tracking platform, along with the vehicle’s GPS location.
3. The platform generates an alert notification to designated recipients via email, SMS, or in-app notification.
4. Operations can view the vehicle’s real-time location and dispatch assistance.

Installation Notes

• The panic button should be installed by a qualified auto-electrician.
• Position the button within easy reach of the driver but discreetly enough that it cannot be accidentally pressed.
• Wire the button between the digital input wire and ground (GND) on the GPS device harness.
• Configure the digital input in Device Manager to trigger an alert when activated.

Configuration in Device Manager

1. In Device Manager, navigate to the Digital Inputs configuration for your device.
2. Set the relevant digital input to ‘Input Monitor’ or ‘Panic Button’ function.
3. Configure the input to trigger on the appropriate active level (typically ‘Low’ when button is pressed to ground).
4. Set up an alert in your tracking platform to notify the appropriate personnel when this input is activated.
