Driver ID gives fleet managers the ability to identify which driver is operating each vehicle at any given time, improving accountability, enabling driver-specific reporting, and supporting PAYG insurance models.
What is Driver ID?
Driver ID is a feature that requires the driver to identify themselves to the vehicle’s GPS tracking system before the vehicle can be used. Once identified, all trip and event data for that journey is tagged with the driver’s name in your reporting platform.
Driver ID Methods Supported by Datalink
Datalink GPS devices support multiple driver identification methods:
iButton® (Dallas Key)
A small physical key that the driver taps against a reader mounted inside the vehicle. Each iButton has a unique 64-bit ID. When tapped, the device logs the driver ID and can optionally hold back ignition until a valid key is presented.
Bluetooth® Driver ID
Drivers carry a BLE tag (such as a key fob or card) and are automatically identified when they enter the vehicle. This hands-free approach is popular for companies seeking a seamless driver experience without physical contact readers.
1-Wire Keypad
A numeric keypad allows drivers to enter a unique PIN code. This eliminates the need for a physical key fob but requires drivers to remember their PIN.
RFID Card Reader
An RFID reader mounted in the vehicle allows drivers to tap their RFID card or fob to identify themselves, similar to a key card access system.
Linking to Immobilisation
Driver ID can be combined with vehicle immobilisation so that the vehicle cannot start until a valid driver presents their credentials. If an unrecognised or invalid driver ID is presented, the vehicle’s starter relay remains open and the engine will not start.
