Remote vehicle immobilisation is a powerful fleet management and vehicle security feature that allows authorised personnel to prevent a vehicle from starting via the tracking platform.
How Remote Immobilisation Works
Datalink GPS tracking devices with digital output capability can be connected to a relay (switch) wired into the vehicle’s ignition or starter circuit. When the platform sends an immobilisation command to the device, the relay opens the circuit, preventing the vehicle from starting.
When the vehicle is cleared for use, the platform sends a release command, the relay closes, and the vehicle can start normally.
Safety Precautions — Very Important
Remote immobilisation must always be used responsibly and safely:
- Never immobilise a vehicle that is in motion. This is extremely dangerous and may cause an accident.
- Immobilisation commands should only be sent when the vehicle is stationary and, ideally, when it is unoccupied.
- Ensure your platform’s immobilisation workflow includes confirmation steps to prevent accidental activation.
- Datalink strongly recommends that immobilisation is only used by trained personnel following your company’s approved procedures.
Common Use Cases
- Theft recovery: Immobilise a stolen vehicle remotely once it has come to a stop in a safe location, in coordination with police.
- After-hours security: Configure automatic immobilisation outside of business hours.
- Driver ID enforcement: Prevent the vehicle from starting until a valid driver ID is presented.
- Non-payment: Fleet leasing companies may immobilise vehicles from lessees who have defaulted on payments.
Installation Requirements
Remote immobilisation requires installation of a relay by a qualified auto-electrician. The relay must be installed in series with the vehicle’s starter or ignition circuit. Datalink can provide wiring guidance and recommend approved installers.
