How GPS Trackers Use Mobile Data
GPS tracking devices use mobile data in two main ways:
- Uploading tracking records — each time the device sends a GPS position, event, or alert to the platform, it uses a small amount of data.
- Downloading GPS aiding data — many GPS devices download AGPS (Assisted GPS) data periodically to speed up GPS satellite acquisition. This is a larger one-off data download that may occur daily or weekly.
Typical Data Usage by Device Type
Data usage varies significantly by device configuration. As a general guide:
- Hardwired vehicle trackers (high tracking frequency): 5–20 MB per month
- Battery-powered asset trackers (low tracking frequency): 1–5 MB per month
- Devices with Bluetooth scanning or additional sensors: slightly higher
Factors That Increase Data Usage
- High tracking frequency (e.g., a record every 30 seconds vs every 5 minutes)
- Frequent stop/start events generating additional logs
- Firmware update downloads
- Large numbers of Bluetooth scan records being uploaded
Choosing the Right SIM Plan
Datalink recommends M2M (Machine-to-Machine) SIM cards from carriers that offer:
- Low monthly data allowances (50 MB–500 MB per device is typically sufficient)
- Multi-network roaming for rural coverage
- No voice or SMS charges (unless required for specific features)
- IoT-specific pricing tiers
Network Technology Considerations
Most Datalink GPS devices support 4G LTE Cat-M1 (LTE-M), which is ideal for GPS tracking — it offers good coverage, low power consumption, and low data costs. Some devices also support NB-IoT for ultra-low-power applications. Check compatibility with your specific device model.
