RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) asset tracking is a powerful technology for automatically identifying and logging physical assets as they move through your facility or yard. Datalink offers comprehensive RFID tracking solutions for a wide range of industries.
What is RFID?
RFID uses radio waves to wirelessly read data from electronic tags attached to your assets. Unlike barcodes, RFID does not require line-of-sight, can be read at distances of up to several metres, and can read multiple tags simultaneously.
Each RFID tag contains a unique identifier (EPC – Electronic Product Code) that is associated with a specific asset in your tracking system.
How Datalink RFID Tracking Works
- RFID tags are attached to assets (tools, equipment, containers, vehicles, or stock).
- RFID readers (fixed or handheld) are installed at key chokepoints such as gates, doorways, or loading docks.
- As tagged assets pass the reader, their identity is automatically recorded.
- The Datalink platform logs the event with a timestamp, reader location, and asset ID.
- You can view asset movement history, generate reports, and receive alerts for specific events.
Types of RFID Tags
Datalink supplies multiple RFID tag types to suit different environments:
- Passive UHF Tags: Low-cost, no battery required, suitable for general asset tracking. Read range up to 10 metres.
- Active Tags: Battery-powered, longer read range, suitable for large yards or outdoor environments.
- On-Metal Tags: Specially designed to work on metallic surfaces where standard tags perform poorly.
- Rugged Tags: Designed for harsh industrial environments with exposure to impact, chemicals, or extreme temperatures.
Key Benefits of RFID Asset Tracking
- Eliminate manual asset checking and paper-based records
- Automatic gate logs — know exactly what left or entered your site
- Reduce asset loss and theft
- Improve stock accuracy and audit trail
- Integrate with ERP and inventory management systems
