Introduction to Bluetooth Asset Tracking

Datalink’s Bluetooth asset tracking solution enables you to monitor the location and status of assets that cannot easily have a full GPS tracker installed — such as trailers, tools, equipment, and pallets.

How Bluetooth Asset Tracking Works

Bluetooth asset tracking uses two components working together:

  1. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) Tags — small, battery-powered tags attached to your assets.
  2. BLE Gateway Devices — Datalink GPS trackers installed in your vehicles or at fixed locations that scan for nearby BLE tags and report their presence back to the tracking platform.

When a vehicle fitted with a BLE-enabled Datalink GPS tracker comes within Bluetooth range (typically 10–100 metres) of a tagged asset, it automatically detects the tag and reports it to the platform. This tells you that the tagged asset was seen near that vehicle at that location and time.

Types of BLE Tags Available from Datalink

Datalink supplies a range of BLE tags and sensors including:

  • Basic location tags for simple asset presence detection
  • Temperature and humidity sensor tags for cold chain monitoring
  • Vibration and shock detection tags
  • Heavy-duty industrial tags for harsh environments

Key Benefits of Bluetooth Asset Tracking

  • Track assets that cannot be powered from a vehicle (trailers, skips, bins, equipment)
  • Detect which driver or vehicle last had contact with an asset
  • Monitor environmental conditions such as temperature during transit
  • Low-cost per-tag solution for large asset pools
  • Battery life of several years on most tag models

Getting Started

To begin using Bluetooth asset tracking with Datalink:

  1. Confirm your existing GPS tracking device supports BLE scanning (contact Datalink to verify).
  2. Enable Bluetooth scanning in your device configuration.
  3. Attach BLE tags to your assets.
  4. Tags will appear in your tracking platform once they are detected by a BLE-enabled gateway.
