GPS tracking devices from Datalink rely on a mobile data connection (SIM card) to transmit location and event data to the tracking platform. This article explains SIM card requirements, ICCIDs, and how to manage your SIM connectivity.
What is a SIM Card?
A SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is a small portable memory chip that connects your GPS tracking device to a mobile network. Most Datalink GPS devices accept a Nano (4FF) or Micro (3FF) SIM card — please confirm the required size for your specific device model.
What is an ICCID?
The ICCID (Integrated Circuit Card Identification Number) is a unique 18–22 digit number printed on the SIM card itself. It serves as the SIM card’s serial number and is used to identify and manage the SIM in device management systems. No two SIM cards share the same ICCID.
Do I Need a Special M2M SIM?
Datalink recommends using an M2M (Machine-to-Machine) SIM rather than a standard consumer SIM. M2M SIMs offer:
- More reliable data-only plans suited to IoT devices
- Longer contract terms with stable pricing
- Multi-network roaming options for better coverage in rural areas
- Better support for LTE-M and NB-IoT network technologies
What APN Do I Need?
Your SIM provider will supply you with the correct APN (Access Point Name) for data connectivity. This must be entered into the device configuration. Contact your SIM provider or Datalink support for assistance.
Do SIM Cards Need to Support Voice and SMS?
Standard GPS tracking operation uses data only. However, some advanced features such as SMS-based alerts or remote configuration via SMS may require voice/SMS capability. Check your specific requirements before selecting a SIM plan.
How Much Data Does a GPS Tracker Use?
Data usage varies by device type and configuration but is generally very low. Typical GPS tracking devices use between 1 MB and 20 MB per month per device depending on tracking frequency, the number of records uploaded, and GPS aiding data downloads. Contact Datalink for guidance on selecting an appropriate data plan.
